What is Golf?

Golf is a game where a person hits a little ball laying on
the ground with a stick called a golf club into a small
hole, also in the ground. This type of ball game does not
have a specific area of play but the game is played on an
area of land that has been mapped out for this specific
game. This area of land is called a golf course.
Holes are of course in the ground but in golf it is also
the distance from the tee to where the ball is hit. The
Green is an island of grass around the hole and this is
where all players want to be.
Some of the most beautiful landscaping is done on golf
courses and the grass is kept very short for easy play as
long as the player stays on the fairway. Going off the
fairway will put the player in longer grass where it makes
hitting the ball a lot harder.
There are many dangers along the fairways of a
golf course like lakes, sand traps, trees, rocks, rivers
and streams. There are rules that go with the hazards such
as a player is not allowed to touch the ground with the
club before hitting the ball, not even for a practice
swing. If a player hits the ball into a hazard, he or she
can play it where it lays. If the ball can't be hit then
the player may remove it to the outside of the hazard but
will suffer a one stroke penalty. If the ball sinks to the
bottom of a lake then the ball can be replaced but it still
costs a penalty.
A par is the number of strokes an expert golfer takes
before getting the ball into the hole and is usually
classified by its par. Par three holes can range in
distance from 100 to 224 meters while par four holes go
from 225 to 434 meters. A five par usually has a distance
of 435 meters or more. Golf is a very popular game and it's
estimated that almost everyone has at least played putt
putt golf at least once in their lives.
